What it is

A small tool that grips the wiper’s rubber edge and trims or reshapes it. The idea is that a worn blade streaks because the fine wiping edge has been rounded off, and re-cutting a clean square edge restores the wipe without replacing the blade.

What to check before you buy

• What is actually worn. If the rubber has hardened, cracked, split or torn, no tool will help. Restorers only address a rounded but otherwise sound edge.
• Whether the frame is the problem. Many wiper failures are the articulating frame or the spring tension, not the rubber. A restored blade on a tired frame still chatters.
• Blade type. Beam-style blades and traditional frame blades have different rubber profiles and not every tool suits both.
• Realistic gain. At best this buys weeks, not seasons.
