What it is
A light fabric canopy with shroud lines to a small weighted figure or ring. You bundle it, throw it high, and it opens and drifts down. “Tangle-free” refers to how the lines are attached and how the toy is designed to be wound – usually with a swivel and stiffened lines that resist knotting, which is the failure mode that ends most parachute toys within an afternoon.
What to check before you buy
- Canopy material. Thin plastic film tears on the first tree branch. Ripstop-style nylon lasts a season or more.
- Line attachment. A swivel at the weight is what genuinely reduces tangling. Lines simply knotted to a lump of plastic will tangle regardless of the marketing.
- Weight of the figure. Too light and it will not descend properly; too heavy and it drops rather than floats.
- Cord length and young children. Long loose cords around toddlers warrant the usual caution.

This is a toy that needs open ground and no wind, which narrows things. The Riverbank Discovery Centre grounds, the Assiniboine riverbank trails and any of the city’s larger parks give you room without trees to eat the canopy. A calm evening works far better than a breezy afternoon – on the prairie a steady wind will simply carry the parachute out of reach, which is how most of them are lost. Save it for a still day and it will survive the summer.
