What it is

A stainless steel caddy that holds a sponge, dish brush or cloth clear of the sink surface so water drains away rather than pooling underneath. Mounting is usually a suction cup, an adhesive pad, or a hook over the divider or tap.

What to check before you buy

• Actual stainless grade. 304 stainless resists rust in a permanently wet environment. Cheaper 201 grade will show orange spots within months in a sink, which rather defeats the purpose.
• Mounting method against your sink material. Suction cups need a smooth, non-porous surface – they fail on brushed stainless and on composite granite sinks. Adhesive holds better but is permanent.
• Drainage design. An open wire or slotted base drains; a shallow tray just relocates the puddle.
• Whether it fits your sponge. Sounds obvious; a surprising number are sized for a slim scrubber.
