What it is

A very small USB-rechargeable LED torch on a keyring or clip. Internal lithium cell, usually charged by micro-USB or USB-C directly on the body. Output is modest by design – these are for finding a keyhole, reading a label, or getting to the fuse box, not for lighting a yard.

What to check before you buy

• Charging port type. USB-C is worth holding out for; micro-USB means carrying a second cable.
• Whether the switch can be knocked on in a pocket. A light that turns itself on in your bag is flat when you need it. Recessed or twist switches are better than a proud button.
• Runtime, honestly assessed. A tiny cell means a short runtime. Anything claiming many hours at full output from a keychain-sized battery is overstating it.
