What it is
A USB-C charging and data cable in a braided nylon sleeve rather than bare TPE rubber. The braid does not improve electrical performance at all – what it does is resist the bending fatigue that kills cables at the connector, which is where essentially every cable fails.
What to check before you buy
- Wattage. A cable rated 60W handles phones and most tablets. Charging a laptop needs 100W, and that requires a cable with an internal e-marker chip. A 60W cable on a 100W laptop charger will simply charge slowly.
- Data speed is separate from charging speed. Many cables that charge at full power transfer data at USB 2.0 speeds – fine for charging, painfully slow for moving video off a camera.
- Strain relief. Look at where the cable meets the connector. A long tapered collar lasts; an abrupt joint fails.
- Length honesty. Longer cables lose voltage. Two metres is a practical maximum for fast charging.

Where a cheap cable is fine and where it is not
For a bedside charger, a car cable or a bag spare, a good braided budget cable is entirely sensible and this is one of the few categories where the cheap option is genuinely close to the expensive one. Where it stops being sensible is anything drawing high power – laptop charging in particular. A poorly made cable at 100W is one of the few genuinely risky purchases in consumer electronics. Buy that one locally, with a brand on it.
