What it is
An aluminium-bodied LED torch with a sliding head that moves the lens relative to the emitter, letting you change from a wide flood to a narrow throw. “Tactical” is a styling word here rather than a specification – it generally signals a knurled body, a tail switch and a strobe mode.
What to check before you buy
- Lumen claims are the least reliable number in the category. Listings routinely advertise outputs that the emitter physically cannot produce. Treat a headline lumen figure as marketing unless the specific LED is named.
- What battery it takes. Many run on a single 18650 lithium cell. Check whether the cell and a charger are included, and whether it will also accept AAAs in a carrier as a backup.
- Cold performance. Lithium cells lose substantial capacity below freezing. A torch that runs four hours at room temperature may give you well under half that at -25.
- Water resistance. Look for an IPX rating. Many budget torches have none at all.
