What it is

Kernmantle cord: a woven outer sheath around a bundle of inner strands. Seven-core means seven inner yarns, which is the count associated with genuine 550-type paracord. The inner strands can be pulled out and used separately as fishing line, thread or snare wire, which is a large part of why the material has the reputation it does.

What to check before you buy

• Real 550 versus lookalike. Genuine mil-spec 550 cord has a 550lb rated breaking strength and seven twisted inner yarns, each of two or three plies. Commercial paracord sold for crafts often has fewer, thinner cores and nothing like the rated strength, despite an identical appearance.
• The stated strength is a breaking strength, not a working load. Working load is a fraction of it. This is not climbing rope and must never be used for anything life-bearing.
• Sheath count. A tighter sheath weave resists abrasion better and frays less when cut.
• Melt the ends. Cut paracord unravels immediately. A lighter seals it.

What people actually use it for here

The survival framing is the marketing; the reality in Westman is more prosaic and more useful. Paracord is what ties a tarp over a woodpile, replaces a broken zipper pull, lashes gear in a truck box, and holds a gate shut until spring. Two genuine cautions: it is not rated for towing or lifting anything you care about, and it stiffens considerably in deep cold, so knots you tied in October can be very hard to undo in January.
