What it is

A moulded abrasive block – essentially fine grit suspended in a rubbery binder – with two different grades on opposite faces. You wet it and rub. The coarse side takes surface rust and scale off metal; the finer side polishes the scratches out afterwards. It behaves more like a very fine sanding block than like a sponge, despite the name.

What to check before you buy

• Grit grades. The two faces should be meaningfully different. A block with near-identical sides gives you no finishing step and leaves visible scouring marks.
• What surface you are attacking. These work on bare steel, cast iron and chrome. They will dull brushed stainless, strip anodising off aluminium, and destroy any painted or clear-coated finish.
• Surface rust only. An abrasive block removes the orange layer. It does nothing about pitting underneath or rust that has come through from the far side of a panel.
• Block size. A larger block is easier on the hands but cannot reach into a corner. Most people end up snapping one in half anyway.

The honest limit of this tool
